We are an outdoorsy couple and we camp a lot. This place - while nice for a day trip or a drive through - is NOT good for camping. The bugs are horrific. You will literally be eaten ALIVE but these bugs. We were supposed to stay for two nights but packed up in a hurry after one night and left at 6am. My husband and I got HUNDREDS of big bites ...

A very well maintained federal park with ongoing improvements to the facilities - more parking, more shower/restrooms, nicely paved campsites, and polite help. Bring a good shovel, because the free ranging ponies love to dump in the campsites. Be careful in the spring because a lot of the site hold standing water for a few days after a good rain - ...

Choose campsite wisely!
By LILLY G, 09/06/07
I love, love, love the ocean and all the wildlife that lives on the island of Assateague. It is so enjoyable to walk along the beach and not have all the high rises and commercialism of nearby Ocean City. It is peaceful and calming to just sit and look out at the ocean.
However, I have some advice if you are planning to camp there. My husband ...

We had a gr8 time!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/16/07
This beach is so much fun. Very Quiet. We saw horses and deer . They roamed aroud and kept to themselves. If you are taking a tent it was very nice . Although , the surf is a little rough so it makes it hard to pitch. Take extra long tent stakes( metal).
At night , we feel asleep to th sound of the waves. which we right over the dune.

A great day or two
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/15/07
We biked the main paved trail and a few other connecting trails and that took a couple of hours at a moderate pace and you get to see a lot of the native marsh lands. The lighthouse is nice, though we did not go up this time because of the line - like any popular place you need to get their early before the crowds arrive. On the weekend there was ...

Not good for families
By Michael S, 06/18/07
The beach was great and definitely wasn't all about the hub bub normal busy beaches are. Those were the good parts. The one bad part is the safety at night. The last night I was there, there were 9 horses that stayed at our campsite all night long. I tried to shoo them away but they wouldn't leave. They kept clomping around the tent ...

Camping at Assateague
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/23/07
Just came back from camping at Assateague National with family and friends. We stayed in tents with the kids and had no problems. Assateague has a beutiful setting of trees, dunes, and long beaches. We didn't spend too much time at the beach but more time at the bayside fishing. Trails for hiking are around as well. I would recommend it for ...

The Best Beach on the Delmarva!
By LibraryLady61, 07/18/06
Want boardwalks? Condominiums? Tacky t-shirt shops? Sorry, you won't find any here. This is National Seashore and no one lives here but birds, small sea creatures and the famous wild ponies.
Facilities are minimal. Because of the many storms there are no boardwalks and all of the changing stations and restrooms are solar powered and ...

the horses are wonderful
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/25/06
We loved this place. The horses are shy, but sweet. It's hard to get up close to them. However, they are a beautiful sight from a distance. The atmosphere is lovely and the waves are huge! Many days the water is warm and you can adjust easily to it. A nice change from the freezing cold ocean waters of other beaches. This is always a great beach ...
