Hawaiian Retreat, in Kapoho, about 20 minutes from Hilo is an amazing place to stay. It is on 3 acres of lush tropical land, planted with many fruit trees. Just walk out the door and you have breakfast. The manager is friendly and helpful. The inn is located within short distance of hot ponds, natural saunas and snorkelling. Each rental has a ...

My favorite Island!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/13/05
We rented a house near the ocean and had a great vacation. The Big Island doesn't swamp you with the "Tourist traps" like some of the other islands. There is plenty to see and do for us "tourists" though. The only good way to see the volcano is on a helicopter, so budget for it!!

The bestes
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/09/05
This side of the island was incredible. We always had something to do and it was never boring. The only junk think is that the weather wasn't always super sunny. Some days are over cast but all the people were nice and they treated us really well there.

A bit of Old Hawaii
By JackJJ, 02/18/06
Hilo is a nice town and a pretty place. It is not as touristy as the Kona Coast where there are plenty of "marketplaces" with tacky shops. There are however lovely gardens and less crowds. We drove across the island 2 times and enjoyed the drive. We did have a bad experience with Tropical Helicopters, so take care in choosing the company you go with.

Hilo and Big Island in general.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/31/08
The Big Island is an extremely cool location. For anything thinking of venturing, pick up a copy of "Hawaii: The Big island Revealed." Written by locals with exceptional guidance on adventures, restaurants, excursions, Lu'aus, etc. It was invaluable to me.
We stayed at the Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala coast (RECOMMENDED!), ...

Awesome
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/26/05
A feel of true "Aloha" amongst the locals, family oriented, magnificent view of both well know volcanos. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa! A feel of close-bond of a small town community on such a big island.

Nothing special
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/26/06
If you like swiming, this place is not for you. Strong streems, rocks, and dirty ocean would spoil any vacation. Volcano is the only place to visit, but that's pretty much it. Night life is not special, there are couple of bars filled with local drunks

Hilo - laidback and local
By infantryboard, 04/15/06
Hilo is so laidback it is terminal - and that is a great thing for tourists! No traffic, no pressure, quiet and very friendly - just the right distance from the Volcanos too! We stayed there from 8-10 April 2006 - what a fantastic time. Went to Honolulu after this and wished we stayed in Hilo instead. There is a bit of security awareness that ...

Old Hawaii
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/25/08
Hilo is not a resort city with lots of nightlife and bars. It is more like the old Hawaii, quiet, laid back, simple and quaint. It is easy to walk around in and visit places like the farmers market, the downtown, parks, waterfalls and the rugged and beautiful Hamakua Coast. And dont forget the Volcano. If you are looking for fancy resort style ...
